Wegovy is a prescription medication that is used to treat adults who are overweight or obese and also have health issues related to their weight. It comes in a single-dose pen as a liquid solution. You can inject it under your skin once a week.
This medication mimics GLP-1, a hormone that causes the pancreas to release insulin and inhibits glucagon secretion, which slows gastric emptying. Through blood sugar regulation, GLP-1 can also aid in reducing appetite.
People using Wegovy may eventually consume less calories and lose weight. As a result, using Wegovy may also help diseases that are associated with weight. It works best when combined with regular exercise and a healthy, low-calorie diet.
In June 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Wegovy for the chronic control of weight in individuals with obesity or people who are overweight and have weight-related health issues.
Researchers conducted four 68-week trials to examine the safety and efficiency of Wegovy before FDA approval. In these four studies, Wegovy was administered to about 3,000 patients, and the FDA approved it since it was deemed safe and beneficial.
According to the FDA’s study of four 68-week trials, Wegovy is a safe and effective strategy for overweight or obese persons to reduce weight and manage chronic health conditions connected to weight.
By the end of the first three trials, nearly 80% of individuals had used Wegovy to lose at least 5% of their body weight, and nearly half had dropped more than 15%.
The medication works best when combined with regular exercise and a calorie deficit (eating fewer calories than you burn).
You can ask your doctor for assistance in deciding if Wegovy is a good option for you.
If you have an allergy to semaglutide or any other component of Wegovy, avoid taking it.
Follow the directions provided by your doctor and chemist when using Wegovy to make sure it works as intended. If the injector pen is cloudy or has debris in it, avoid using Wegovy. Additionally, avoid injecting Wegovy into skin that has bruising, soreness, redness, stretch marks, or scars.
Wegovy may cause dizziness, thus it’s advised to avoid substances like alcohol or marijuana that can further cause dizziness. Avoid operating machinery or operating a vehicle if you experience fatigue or vertigo after taking Wegovy.
Wegovy is injected under the skin as a liquid solution from a pre-filled pen. There are several dose strengths available for it:
0.25 milligrams in every 0.5 milliliters of a liquid solution
0.5 mg/0.5 mL
1 mg/0.5 mL
1.7 mg/0.75 mL
2.4 mg/0.75 mL
Wegovy is typically prescribed by doctors at a 0.25–0.5 mL initial dose. Patients inject the dose once a week for four weeks.
The medication strength rises by one level every four weeks. By week 17, you can take Wegovy at a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg.
Your doctor will be able to advise you on how long to take Wegovy based on your test results and side effects.
Your insurance, pharmacy, dosage size, and the number of pens you purchase at once are just a few of the factors that will affect the price you explicitly pay for Wegovy. Wegovy’s cost varies by plan, but it’s typically cheaper with health insurance like other medications are. A Healify Now can help if you’re trying to figure out the precise cost of Wegovy.
In the clinical studies, about half of the adults dropped 15% or more of their body weight or about 35 pounds. And almost one-third of the participants lost at least 20% of their body weight or 46 pounds. Along with taking Wegovy, the participants increased their exercise and followed a low-calorie diet.
Check the pen and then wash your hands. Check for breaks or cracks, and make sure the medication is clear and colorless by looking through the pen window.
Use soap and water or an alcohol swab to clean the injection site. You can inject it into the upper arms, stomach, or upper legs (front of thighs).
Take off the pen cap, then firmly press the pen against your skin to inject Wegovy. Keep applying pressure till the yellow bar stops moving (usually a few seconds).
Throw away the pen in a sharps disposal container or heavy-duty plastic container with a lid.
A strict screening process is used by clinicians working with Healify Now to determine who is qualified to receive prescription weight loss medication. This process includes checking for a specific Body Mass Index (BMI), the absence of specific medical conditions, and a history of unsuccessful weight loss using only lifestyle changes. You must have a BMI of at least 30 if there isn’t a health issue related to your weight. Your BMI must be 27 or higher if there is a health issue connected to your weight.
If a person is not a good candidate for weight loss medication, Healify Now can still help them manage other aspects of their health, such as lifestyle modifications and chronic diseases, mental health, and immediate medical needs.
Your clinician and care team will consult with your insurance company and you to come up with the best care plan for you. Your insurance company could require you to first try alternative weight loss strategies before approving you for a GLP-1 medicine, depending on your weight and other medical issues.
If that is the situation, your physician can start by offering an alternative treatment and then reevaluate your insurance authorization a few months later.
Your clinician will never use a temporary discount or another similar tactic to persuade you to take a prescription that you won’t be able to afford in the long run. We’ll collaborate with you to make sure your care plan is both manageable and reasonable.
We recommend everyone to sign up for an online appointments instead of in-person visits.
