— Overview

What Wegovy is

Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly) received FDA approval in 2021 for chronic weight management in adults with BMI 30+ or BMI 27+ with at least one weight-related comorbidity. It was the first medication in a generation to demonstrate consistent ~15% average body weight loss in randomized trials — the STEP series.

In 2024, the FDA expanded Wegovy's indication based on the SELECT trial results, which showed that semaglutide reduced major adverse cardiovascular events by 20% in adults with obesity and pre-existing cardiovascular disease. This was a landmark expansion — semaglutide is now positioned as cardiovascular preventive therapy in addition to weight management.

Wegovy and compounded semaglutide contain the same active molecule. Wegovy is the brand-name product manufactured by Novo Nordisk; compounded semaglutide is prepared by licensed U.S. compounding pharmacies. HealifyNow can prescribe either, with the choice typically driven by cost, availability, and clinical judgment.

— Process

How HealifyNow makes it simple

From your first message to your medication arriving at your door — clinician-guided, every step.

1

Schedule your free visit

A care team member meets with you to understand your goals, medical history, and treatment preferences. The first visit is no-cost and no-commitment — we want you to be confident before moving forward.

2

Meet your licensed clinician

Connect by secure video or phone with a U.S.-licensed physician or nurse practitioner who reviews your full picture — labs, prior treatments, current medications, and lifestyle — and decides what is clinically appropriate.

3

Receive your prescription if appropriate

If your clinician determines treatment is right for you, they issue a prescription that goes to a licensed U.S. pharmacy. We coordinate discreet shipping, or you can fill it locally. Follow-up visits are built in.

— Mechanism

How Wegovy works

Wegovy works through GLP-1 receptor activation across multiple tissues: appetite reduction in the hypothalamus, slowed gastric emptying, improved insulin response, and direct cardiovascular protective effects. See our semaglutide page for the detailed mechanism.

The 2.4 mg target dose is higher than Ozempic's diabetes dosing (up to 2 mg) — which is the dose at which clinical trials demonstrated the consistent ~15% weight loss. Lower doses produce lower weight loss; higher doses haven't been shown to add benefit and increase side effects.

The titration schedule (16-week ramp-up to 2.4 mg) exists to minimize GI side effects. Members who climb too fast often experience nausea that pushes them off therapy. Slower titration in some members may improve tolerance.

— Safety

Important safety information

Your clinician will review every relevant detail with you. Here are the most important points to know up front.

GI side effects

Most common during titration. Slow ramp-up and dietary adjustments help.

Thyroid cancer history

Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma rules out use.

Pregnancy contraindication

Discontinue at least 2 months before planned conception.

Gallbladder disease

Rapid weight loss increases gallstone risk. Tell your clinician about gallbladder history.

Important

All medications must be prescribed by a licensed provider based on medical necessity. Treatment is not suitable for everyone. Results may vary.

— Use

How to use Wegovy

Wegovy is dispensed as single-dose pre-filled pens. One pen per week, injected subcutaneously into abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate sites each week.

Standard titration: 0.25 mg for 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and finally 2.4 mg. Total 16-20 weeks to reach maintenance dose. Your clinician personalizes the speed based on your tolerance.

Refrigerate unused pens. Once in use, can stay at room temperature for up to 28 days. Dispose of needles in a sharps container.

Lab and weight checks at intervals through the first year; ongoing follow-up at quarterly to biannual cadence after stable.

— FAQ

Frequently asked questions

HealifyNow makes it easy to move forward with confidence. Here are the answers to what people ask us most.

How is Wegovy different from Ozempic?

+

Same active ingredient (semaglutide); different dose (2.4 mg vs up to 2 mg) and different FDA-approved use (weight management vs diabetes).

Is Wegovy worth the cost compared to compounded semaglutide?

+

Wegovy is the brand-name, FDA-approved product. Compounded semaglutide contains the same molecule from licensed compounding pharmacies and is often substantially less expensive. Choice depends on your situation; your clinician will discuss.

How much weight will I lose on Wegovy?

+

STEP-1 trial averaged 14.9% at 68 weeks. Individual results vary widely; about 1 in 3 loses 20%+, about 1 in 10 loses less than 5%.

Will my insurance cover Wegovy?

+

Coverage is mixed. Some commercial plans cover Wegovy with prior auth and significant cost-sharing; many do not. Medicare typically does not cover weight-loss medications. We can help you check.

How long should I stay on Wegovy?

+

Obesity is a chronic condition. Long-term use is typical for sustained results. Many members continue indefinitely at a maintenance dose.

What happens if I stop Wegovy?

+

Weight regain over 12-18 months is common (research shows about two-thirds of weight returns on average). This is consistent across all weight loss medications.

Can I get Wegovy for cardiovascular protection without obesity?

+

The current FDA indication still requires BMI 27+ with comorbidities or BMI 30+. Cardiovascular protection is an additional benefit within that population.

Is Wegovy available for adolescents?

+

Yes — FDA approved for ages 12+ in 2022 for adolescents with BMI in the obesity range. Requires pediatric-experienced clinician evaluation.
